The WHSC1L1 gene encodes the NSD3 histone lysine methyltransferase. WHSC1L1 methylates both the H3K4 residue, which constitutes an epigenetic mark for transcriptional activation, and the H3K27 residue, which acts as a repressive mark. Thus, it is controversial whether this gene acts as an oncogene or a tumor suppressor. WHSC1L1 is altered by amplification in a subset of various cancers, including breast and lung tumors.
